No pictures.
You know when you get used to putting pictures up all the time, you run out of things to take pictures of, so I was going through the more recent pictures in the archive, and I have nothing, so this post will be in essence about nothing.
Can I ask this question though?
Hunter and I went out car shopping tonight, and as much as I HATE car shopping, I was ready to just go to the Ford dealership and pick out something quick and get out of there.
Obviously that does not work at car dealerships, as you go by the same script everytime when buying a new car. In a nutshell, here it is!
Salesperson: "OK, so you want the Porche? With rebates and incentives, here is the price! $$,$$$.
ME: "OK, I really only want to spend something in the range of $$,$$$! I really don't want to bicker and go back and forth, I am pretty set on that!"
Salesperson: "Well, I am pretty sure that we can find you something else in that price range!"
ME: "If I wanted something else, I would have looked at something else, but I want this for that price"
Salesperson: "I know that at the price you are talking we are not gonna be able to swing it, my manager won't accept that"
ME: "See what they say!"
Saleperson goes and asks for 10 minutes and comes back and says "This is how low we can go!" (Writes down $$,$$$)
ME: OH CRAP, did you not hear what my max price was? That's OK, I will just keep continuing to look"
Now the manager comes over and listens in and starts spewing the same garbage!
"This is the invoice price from the manufacturer, we will never make any money on this, surely it is easy to understand?"
ME: Well, first of all I am not interested in your profit, nor do I really NEED the car right now(LIE) so like I said, I will continue looking"
Manager: "Hold on 1 second, I will run the numbers again!!" (Comes back with like $100 taken off) WHOAH, this is as low as we can go, and we would even be losing $$ if we gave you this steal!"
ME: "Oh, well, I may have been born on a Thursday, but I wasn't born YESTERDAY! You won't LOSE money, but like I said, I will keep looking!"
Manager: "OKAY, sorry we can't help you out, good luck"
ME: OKAY!
Next day
(Now) Red faced saleperson on the phone: "Hey, this is Billy Bob from Cletus Porche and RV Center, just checking to see how things are going!"
ME: Fine!
Salesperson: "Well, My manager was able to find a loophole in the system and we can get it down to a total firesale price of $$,$$$!"
ME: Well, that is only $50 lower, so why would you now have wasted a phone call, and I am not driving back over for that. Besides, I already bought the same car for the price I was asking at the other dealship, and the car smells even better! Thanks though!"
Saleperson: "WOW, they lost a lot of money on that car, so you got a good deal Let me know if you ever need a car again!" By!!
ME: Why would I come back and buy a car from you when it didn't work this time? BY!!
Now, you figure that if all these dealerships are losing so much $$$$$$, where do they get $$$ to build these really nice dealerships, and afford to be gicing hot dogs and sodas away?"
Oh well, just my rambling thought! But I didn't buy a car tonight, this was when I bought the last vehicle! I just hate going through the painful car buying process!

Erik,
No pun intended, but buying a car drives me crazy. First there's the research...safety, gas mileage, etc., etc. (Ron does all that). Then there are the sales people (they all seem to have the same vocabulary - "so tell me Sue what made you want all wheel drive?"). This is usually asked during a blizzard. Then "why do you like red...why not get another green one?" So in short, Erik, good luck. And stick to your guns. :)
Your pain felt across the board. :)
When I bought my last vehicle (which you and I were friends during) I had a certain amount of cash to buy the one I wanted. After going through their B.S. I was sticking to the price I had to give them, in cash, that day.
His lowest and my highest were $2000 apart. I wanted it so bad but I wouldn't budge. (Incidently I took Coffeehusband with me and he WAS going to budge, but he could be talked into buying an ice cream cone in Alaska in the middle of a blizzard, which is why I don't leave the car buying to him).
I walked.
They emailed me and called me for about 2 months and I kept saying the same thing: I want THIS MODEL FOR THIS PRICE.... still 2K different.
Finally I put that 'cash' towards a down payment on the Land Rover and got a 100% better vehicle for only a little more money.
I WIN!!!!!!
I think I am just going to drive my little beauty until it blows up or falls apart. Thanks for reminding me how bad people can suck.
Wow did that strike up some memories.
This is why I sent Sugar Daddy to buy our last car.
I can't stand the game playing, cheesey-slimeball mentality that the dealerships have. It's like they seriously think you WERE born yesterda.
I dont mind it. The key is you have to be willing to walk! If you are going to be fair you have to say your actual price not lower hoping they will go for that one. The other thing if you finance through them you can get lower prices too, Just make sure you know what rate you would get from other places first.

Oh the other thing you tell them this is the number I need a yes or no not another number.

Ok, since I worked in car sales for about a year (where I met my husband, ironically), I know how this works. New cars only have a certain amount of mark-up, so generally they will not go below a certain price, because they make less money on new cars, unless there are kick ass rebates. The ONLY reason they sell new cars is to stay franchised, and keep their financing through the major car companies. However, used cars... that's where the money is. (I promptly moved down to the used lot when I figured this out!) Say they take it in for 5K, and KBB is 8K... they make a nice profit. They take it in for more, less profit, and so on. Sales reps really do have NO control over this, and often don't know what we brought a used car in on until the manager tells us. The "4-square" game they play is the FIRST sales tactic they teach you, it really is bullshit. Of course, the bigger profit they make, the bigger our commission, so we're gonna try and keep you at the high price.
The flip side is when my hubs and I went to buy our (used) van, I had done all my homework before hand, found out exactly what I could get approved for, what the van was worth, what they were asking for it on their website, and what we needed on our trade to not hang ourselves. I had a "blank check" loan already, so I walked in, told them "Don't BS me, I used to do your job, this van, this price, this trade-in, make it happen." It went SO smoothly, I was really impressed that they didn't try to use the bullying tactics my old bosses used. It almost made me miss sales, but then I remembered the 70 hour work weeks and intense pressure that led to multiple anxiety attacks, and me quitting.
